Writing Circles

"Boundaries create the space for reverence." —Parker J. Palmer

We call our classes "circles," in part because our chairs are arranged in the shape—but also because each session is an intentional, co-created space, made and re-made with each gathering. They're where we come to give ourselves the gifts of time, creativity and community.

We strive to provide a safe and supportive space where we can learn to trust our own voices. Time is woven together for writing and listening, and the give and take of constructive, encouraging feedback.

I've grown as a person as much as I've grown as a writer. I've learned to trust the WWf(a)C process and it's allowed me to trust my small group and large circle. -Chris

Facilitators are responsible for holding this space, but every writer is a necessary element. A few simple steps at the beginning of each circle provide a comforting repetition that help us, for a couple of short hours, to leave the outside world behind and let our inner voices be heard.

Choosing to write in community and participate fully in a writing circle is a gift to oneself.

Circle Practices

Small Steps To Bring Us Into the Circle

  • To open, we pass a lit candle around the circle, giving each writer the opportunity to set a silent intention, or simply take a few deep breaths. This also signals the start of our time together, by "zipping up" our confidential space.
  • We always begin with a poem read aloud by the facilitator, bringing us together in our shared love of words and language.
  • The "talking stone" is passed, letting each writer check in.
  • At the end of our time together, we'll pass the extinguished candle in the opposite direction, "unzipping" our circle and signifying the end of our intentional time together.

It's important to note that participation is always on an invitation-only basis. No one is ever required to speak or share. Similarly, each participant is asked to agree to confidentiality. This allows writers the freedom to safely share vulnerable, difficult or personal material.
