Writing Circles
Spark the Writer in You
We call our writing classes “circles.” We sit in a circle, but it’s just one part of how we create a nurturing and supportive space where participants feel comfortable writing and sharing (only if they want to). Each class offers the opportunity for growth as a writer and person.
Core Classes
In our Core Classes, facilitators provide writing prompts and resources and encourage participants to develop their own subject matter. Classes allow for personal writing time, sharing in large and small groups, guidance in giving and receiving useful, positive feedback, and opportunities to read aloud to an audience.
Craft of Writing
The Craft of Writing classes provide participants the opportunity to further hone their writing voice and skills. Using example works, exercises and discussion, writers are encouraged to strengthen the power of story within their work. Some of the craft classes focus on craft elements, such as pace, and in other classes the circles will provide space to discuss goals, tackle narrative problems, share new work, and strengthen a sense of accountability to each other.
Specialty Classes
Women Writing for (a) Change offers a rich array of specialty classes and workshops that are fun and creative, such as SoulCollage, Let’s Be Perfectly Queer, Take Heart: A Monthly Contemplative Poetry Circle, and Visioning Your Best Life. Our specialty classes offer theme-based opportunities that are typically shorter time commitments.
Retreats
Women Writing for (a) Change offers writing retreats for those seeking time for writing, rest, and renewal. The retreats follow a pattern of structured and free time, alone and together, with mornings for individual writing, afternoons for small groups, and evenings for large group activities and readings. The retreats are an opportunity for participants to go deep with a project or to start something new.
Free Sampler
Not sure if a class is right for you? The FREE Samplers are designed to introduce new participants to a sampling of a class before committing to an entire course. This is a great opportunity to meet the facilitator and experience the joy of writing in community.
